Abstract
Mit dem Aufkommen des Marktmodells als „neuem Paradigma“ der soziologischen Erklärung von Religion in Abgrenzung vom „alten Paradigma“ der Säkularisierungstheorie entbrannte eine heftige Debatte zwischen den Vertretern beider Richtungen mit zahlreichen Versuchen die präferierte Theorie empirisch zu belegen oder aber die jeweils andere Seite zu diskreditieren. Religiöse Pluralität war lange Zeit ein Angelpunkt in dieser Debatte, denn in kaum einem anderen Aspekt wird der Gegensatz zwischen den beiden Argumentationslinien so deutlich. Ab dem Ende der 1990er Jahre gab es zunehmend Kritik an der Operationalisierung von Pluralität über den Herfindahl-Hirschmann-Index (HHI).
