Die Collected Papers sind eine fast vollständige Sammlung der zuvor an anderer Stelle veröffentlichten Artikel, in denen John Rawls die Gedanken seiner Hauptwerke entwickelt, präzisiert und auf Kritik hin verteidigt oder revidiert. Das Werk ist äußerlich überschaubar. Es umfasst 26 Artikel in chronologischer Reihenfolge, gefolgt von einem Interview, in dem sich Rawls dem liberal-katholischen Commonweal zu seinem politischen Liberalismus erklärt.
