Zusammenfassung
Zephyr (auch Zephir), gr. Ζέφυρος (evtl. abgeleitet von zóphos, Dunkelheit), lat. Zephyrus bzw. Favonius (Erwärmer), personifiziert als Sohn der Titanen Astraios und der Eos den Westwind (vgl. Rausch 2002). Während bei Homer auch sein bedrohliches Potenzial für die Seefahrer aufscheint, wird er in der Nachfolge Hesiods zumeist zu den nützlichen, berechenbaren Winden gezählt. In der antiken Literatur (vgl. Frensch 1978, 17–50) wird der Westwind als einer der vier Hauptwinde (ánemoi/animi) mit dem Frühling assoziiert. In Antithese zum Winterwind Boreas steht er für Erneuerung in der Natur.
