Sebald spricht explizit sehr selten von Ethik, allenfalls in seinen Essays in Auseinandersetzung mit anderen Schriftstellern: Seine These »Es geht also im Bereich der Ästhetik letzten Endes immer um ethische Fragen« (UH 115) ist jedoch programmatisch und durchzieht sein gesamtes literarisches, literaturwissenschaftliches und literaturkritisches Werk.
