Kulturelle Facetten der Scham

Zusammenfassung

Das Gefühl der Scham ist von fundamentaler Bedeutung für soziale Konformitätsprozesse. In der sozialwissenschaftlichen Literatur wird Scham als relationsbezogene, selbstreflexive Emotion beschrieben, die das erlebende Subjekt auf die bewertende Wahrnehmung der eigenen Person durch bedeutsame andere ausrichtet. Das Empfinden von Scham setzt, wie bereits Simmel (1901) in Anlehnung an Darwin (1872) formulierte, die Fähigkeit zur »Selbstaufmerksamkeit « voraus, d. h. die Fähigkeit sich selbst »mit den Augen der anderen« (Simmel 2000, 436) zu sehen und deren möglicherweise negative Bewertung der eigenen Verhaltensweisen und Persönlichkeitsmerkmale zu antizipieren.
