Der Begriff des populären Wissens ist nur schwer klar zu definieren, da er gleichzeitig zwei komplementäre Komponenten umfasst. Einerseits bezeichnet er das praktische Alltagswissen und den ›gesunden Menschenverstand‹ oder ›common sense‹. Dieses Wissen ist unspezifisch, eher implizit und manifestiert sich oft in Gemeinplätzen.
