Zusammenfassung
Lateinamerika hatte stets ein zwiespältiges und problematisches Verhältnis zur Moderne, meinte der Essayist und Schriftsteller Octavio Paz. Diesen Eindruck präzisierte er 1990 in Stockholm, als er den Nobelpreis für Literatur entgegennahm. Demnach hätten sich die Lateinamerikaner selbst immer schon als Verkörperungen der vormodernen Kehrseite eines modernen Europas dargestellt: »This is why there was frequent talk of ›Europeanizing‹ our countries: the modern was outside and had to be imported« (Paz 1990). In der Tat prägt diese Selbstdarstellung die Anwendung des Moderne-Begriffs in Lateinamerika, insofern die Moderne räumlich und zeitlich an die Strukturen Westeuropas und später dann der USA gekoppelt wurde. Deshalb findet gemäß dem noch heute herrschenden Selbstverständnis vieler Lateinamerikaner die Moderne entweder außerhalb der Region oder, wenn in Lateinamerika, zu einem Zeitpunkt statt, der in der Zukunft liegt: Mit Moderne beschrieb und beschreibt man also oft nicht die Gegenwart, sondern die Zukunft Lateinamerikas.
