Zusammenfassung
Platons Überlegungen zur ›Ähnlichwerdung des Menschen mit Gott‹ (homoiôsis theô) — ein Ausdruck, der sich nur im Theaitetos findet — ist in seinen Dialogen in die Fragestellung eingebettet, was das Ziel des menschlichen Lebens ist und welche Voraussetzungen gegeben sein müssen, damit ein Mensch glücklich werden kann. Weil die Götter die glücklichsten Wesen überhaupt sind, kann der Weg des Menschen zu seinem eigenen Glück, seiner eudaimonia, als Ähnlichwerdung mit Gott verstanden werden. Je ähnlicher er den glückseligen Göttern wird, desto glücklicher wird er selbst. Für die Auffassung, dass sich der Mensch, um glücklich zu werden, an Gott angleichen und ihm ähnlich werden muss, argumentiert Platon nicht durch einen Rückgriff auf die Polis-Religion. Vorausgesetzt wird vielmehr ein Gottesbegriff, der vor allem philosophisch geprägt ist. So ist ein Gott nicht nur, wie in der Polis-Religion angenommen wird, unsterblich und glückselig, sondern vor allem gut und gerecht (s. Kap. IV.10).
