Abstract
Fontanes Roman gilt mit guten Gründen als zentrales Werk des Poetischen oder Bürgerlichen Realismus (s. Kap. 6, 7, 15, 26, 36–38), als ein Höhe- und zugleich Wendepunkt der Epoche hin zur Klassischen Moderne, sofern man diese nicht wie Delabar (2010) erst 1918 beginnen lässt, sondern mit der frühen Moderne um 1890 – entweder vor oder nach dem Naturalismus.
