Zusammenfassung

Das pragmatistische Denken war von Beginn an unauflöslich mit zeitgenössischen naturwissenschaftlichen Theorien und Forschungsergebnissen verbunden. Naturwissenschaftliche Einsichten dienten den Pragmatisten zur Ausformulierung einer naturalistischen, aber dezidiert nicht-deterministischen und anti-reduktionistischen Theorieperspektive. Grundlegend für die Genese dieser Theorieperspektive war vor allem die spezifische Interpretation der darwinschen Evolutionstheorie (vgl. Nungesser 2017; s. Kap. 31). Vor diesem Hintergrund wird verständlich, warum der Tier-Mensch-Vergleich zu einem zentralen Ausgangspunkt der pragmatistischen Theorieentwicklung werden konnte – insbesondere bei James, Dewey und Mead. Vor allem innerhalb der Human-Animal-Studies wurden die Argumente der Pragmatisten – in erster Linie diejenigen Meads – in den letzten Jahren unter Bezugnahme auf neuere empirische Erkenntnisse massiv kritisiert. Andere Arbeiten betonen im Hinblick auf aktuelle Forschungen hingegen gerade den innovativen Charakter der pragmatistischen Thesen. Diese Spannung deutet darauf hin, dass es sich beim Tier-Mensch-Vergleich nicht nur um eine theoriegeschichtlich zentrale Frage, sondern auch um eine aktuelle und theoriesystematisch bedeutende Herausforderung für pragmatistisches Denken handelt.
