Zusammenfassung

Die drei lyrischen Texte, von denen im Folgenden die Rede sein soll, sind Arthur Rimbauds Prosagedicht Barbare, Walt Whitmans freirhythmischer Song of Myself (vor allem das Schlussgedicht dieses Zyklus) und Konstantinos Kavafis’ jambisches Dialoggedicht Περιμένοντας τους βαρβάρους – Warten auf die Barbaren. Rimbauds Barbare ist Teil der Illuminations, eines Zyklus aus 44 Prosagedichten, der vermutlich 1872–1875 entstand und 1886 ohne Wissen des Autors zunächst in der Zeitschrift La Vogue, dann auch in Buchform veröffentlicht wurde. Whitmans Song of Myself findet sich ohne Titel und Unterteilung schon in der Erstausgabe der Leaves of Grass von 1855; die Unterteilung in 52 durchnummerierte Teile (die man als Gedichte oder Sektionen auffassen kann) erfolgte in der Ausgabe von 1867, und den Titel Song of Myself erhielt das Gedicht erst in der 1881 veröffentlichten endgültigen Fassung der Leaves of Grass, die zuvor von Auflage zu Auflage überarbeitet und erweitert worden waren. Kavafis’ Gedicht entstand 1898 und wurde 1904 gedruckt.
