Zussamenfassung
Unter dem ›früheren Neuplatonismus‹ soll hier – gemäß einer unter den späteren Neuplatonikern geläufigen Einteilung (vgl. Proklos, Theologia Platonica 1,1; Damaskios, In Phaedonem I 172) – in erster Linie die Epoche des Plotin (205–270 n. Chr.) und des Porphyrios von Tyros (233–ca. 305 n. Chr.) verstanden werden. Auf die dritte große Gründerfigur, Iamblichos von Chalkis (ca. 245–330 n. Chr.), der eher zu dem stark von ihm geprägten Spätneuplatonismus zu rechnen ist, kann nur ein kurzer Ausblick gegeben werden.
