Zusammenfassung

John Allan, der den dreijährigen Edgar Poe nach dem Tod der Mutter aufnahm, gehörte zu den wohlhabenden Bewohnern Richmonds. Er handelte vor allem mit Tabak, aber besaß auch einen Anteil an einem Gemischtwarenladen. Er stammte aus Schottland und war 1794, etwa mit 14 Jahren, zu seinem in Richmond reich gewordenen Onkel William Galt gereist, für den er fortan arbeitete, bis er sich, wiederum mit der Unterstützung seines Onkels, 1800 selbstständig machen konnte. Mit einem anderen Angestellten Galts, Charles Ellis, gründete er die Firma ›Ellis and Allan‹. Der genauen Buchführung in diesem Kontor wie auch dem umfangreichen und sorgfältig aufbewahrten Briefwechsel Allans verdanken wir heute die meisten Informationen über Edgar Allan Poes Jugend.
