Zusammenfassung
Der griechische Gott Apollon ist Namensgeber der Stadt. Er wurde dort als Apollon Agyieus — der Straßenbeschützer und Gefahrenhelfer — durch Kultbilder in Säulenform verehrt. Die Sage nennt einen Korinther namens Gylax als Stadtgründer. Die Reste der antiken Stadt liegen auf einem Hügel beim Dorf Pojani. Die 9 km entfernte Mündung des Flusses Aous (Vjosa) befand sich einst wesentlich näher bei Apollonia als heute.
