Zusammenfassung
Murdoch verbrachte ihre Kindheit und Schulzeit in London und Bristol, studierte in Oxford klassische Philologie und später in Cambridge Philosophie. Nach dem Studium war sie Angestellte im englischen Finanzministerium und arbeitete von 1944–1946 in London, Belgien und Österreich in der Verwaltung der United Nations. Von 1948 bis 1963 war sie Dozentin für Philosophie am St. Annes College in Oxford und lehrte von 1963 bis 1967 am Royal College of Art in London. 1956 heiratete sie den Oxforder Literaturkritiker John Bayley.
