Zusammenfassung
Der Islam (wörtlich die »Hingabe« an den Willen Gottes) besitzt verschiedene Quellen, aus denen er sein politisches Denken schöpft. Da ist zum einen die religiöse Rechtswissenschaft (fiqh), die im Rahmen dieser Darstellung nur gestreift wird (eine Übersicht findet sich bei Lambton 1981). Da ist zum anderen die Philosophie, deren große Zeit mit Al-Kindi (800–870) beginnt und mit Averroës (1126–1198) endet. Ihr wird im Folgenden die größte Aufmerksamkeit gewidmet. Für umfassendere Darstellungen sei verwiesen auf de Boer (1901), Rosenthal (1958), Sharif (1963/66), Watt (1968), Fakhry (1970, 21983), Watt/Welch (1980) und Leaman (1985). Von den Philosophen werden im Einzelnen erörtert Al-ārābi (870–950), Avicenna (980–1037) und Averroës (1126–1198). Den Abschluß bildet ein Blick auf Ibn Khalūn (1332–1406), einen ersten »Soziologen« und Kulturphilosophen.
