Zusammenfassung
Die wissenschaftliche Rezeption der Psychoanalyse in den USA (vgl. Oberndorf 1953, Hoffman 1957, Morrison 1968, Hale 1971, Spector 1973) unterscheidet sich von derjenigen in Europa zunächst dadurch, daß sie eine kontinuierliche Geschichte aufweist, sich also ohne die Unterbrechung durch eine faschistische Unterdrückung in einem geistig offenen Klima entwickeln konnte, aber auch durch ihre Medizinalisierung, weil die amerikanischen Analytiker in der Mehrzahl Ärzte waren, sich in erster Linie als Ärzte verstanden und in der Welt der Medizin wissenschaftliche Anerkennung ihrer psychotherapeutischen Arbeit erstrebten. Diese Anpassung der ihrem Ursprung nach sowohl naturwissenschaftlich-biologischen wie hu-manistisch-hermeneutischen Lehre Freuds an eine einseitig szienti-stische Wissenschaftsnorm spiegelt sich auch in der englischen Übersetzung von Freuds Schriften durch James Strachey, der berühmten Standard Edition (1953-1966), die für die weltweite Verbreitung des psychoanalytischen Gedankenguts außerhalb des deutschen Sprachgebiets entscheidend gewesen ist. Bruno Bettelheim hat die Tendenz zur Assimilation von Freuds Sprache und Terminologie an das naturwissenschaftliche Paradigma, die in der Standard Edition spürbar ist, in seiner vielbeachteten Kritik an der Übersetzung einzelner Fachausdrücke getadelt (1983).
