Zusammenfassung

Haiti erreichte seine nationale Unabhängigkeit am 1. 1. 1804. Diesem Ereignis vorausgegangen waren seit 1791 andauernde innere Unruhen (Sklavenbefreiung und Vertreibung der weißen Siedler) sowie die Niederlage napoleonischer Truppen beim Versuch, die einstmals wohlhabendste Kolonie Frankreichs, die “Perle der Antillen”, mit Gewalt in den französischen Staatsverband zurückzuführen. Zwar konnte das Land während der Präsidentschaften von Alexandre Pétion und Jean-Pierre Boyer (bis 1843) seine äußere Souveränität sichern, doch waren die inneren Verhältnisse während des gesamten 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts von ständiger politischer Instabilität gekennzeichnet.
