Zusammenfassung
British Guiana durchlief einen im regionalen Vergleich schwierigen Deko-lonisierungsprozeß, der sich im Zeichen des Kalten Krieges vollzog und vom Willen der britischen Kolonialmacht und der USA bestimmt war, die Etablierung eines marxistisch orientierten Systems zu verhindern. Nach dem Ende eines breiten, vor allem antikolonial ausgerichteten Konsenses der Eliten Mitte der 50er Jahre entwickelte sich die ethnische Zugehörigkeit zum indo- oder afroguyanischen Bevölkerungsteil zur dominierenden politischen Konfliktlinie des Landes.
