Zusammenfassung
Die Abwicklung des elektronischen Handels findet am elektronischen Marktplatz statt. Dort sind Käufer und Verkäufer an verschiedenen Standorten anwesend, die ein intelligentes Instrument benötigen, um miteinander zu kommunizieren. Auch wenn der Begriff „elektronischer Handel“ nur im Zusammenhang mit jenen Verbrauchern verwendet wird, die Waren und Dienstleistungen mit Hilfe eines PCs über das Internet erwerben, gilt er immer noch als ein rasant wachsender Geschäftsbereich. In den USA hatten Ende 1997 mehr als 51 Millionen Erwachsene einen Online-Zugang. Davon hatten 17% bereits iiber das Internet gekauft; der Monatsumsatz beträgt dabei durchschnittlich knapp 100 DM. Dies entspricht heute einem Jahresumsatz von etwa neun Milliarden DM. Bemerkenswert ist auch, daß sich die Art der erworbenen Waren und Dienstleistungen rasch ändert. Im Jahre 1996 wurden z.B. Computerausstattungen als der Renner bei America Online registriert; 1997 hingegen erreichten Computerausstattungen nicht einmal Platz 5 – sie wurde durch Kleidung (trotz des allgemeinen Glaubens, Kleidung sei nicht optimal geeignet für den Online-Verkauf, weil Kunden die Waren vorab berühren und fühlen wollen) als Spitzenreiter ersetzt.
