Zusammenfassung

Wie die vorigen Kapitel gezeigt haben, überblendet Thomas Mann mit seinem Doktor Faustus systematisch seine Vorlagen, die unter dem Text mehr oder weniger ersichtlich durchschimmern. Selbst ein Leser, der den wiederholten Äußerungen des Autors, sein Roman habe “mit Goethes Faust nichts gemein”1, Glauben schenkt, dürfte sich fragen, weshalb Thomas Mann den offensichtlichen Bezug zu einem Text, der so bekannt ist, daß er dem Leser wohl stets mehr oder weniger klar vor Augen ist — auch wenn der Autor nicht ausdrücklich darauf Bezug nimmt —, einfach negiert. Die Insistenz, mit der Thomas Mann jede Gemeinsamkeit zwischen seinem Roman und Goethes Faust ablehnt, weckt geradezu Verdacht und könnte darin begründet sein, daß der Autor durch diese Taktik die offensichtliche Leserlenkung kaschieren wollte. Oberflächlich betrachtet, scheint die Goethe-Nachfolge im Faustus-Roman tatsächlich abzubrechen. Eine intertextuelle Lektüre hingegen bringt Erstaunliches an den Tag.
