Zusammenfassung

Abgesehen vom Zeitalter der totalitären Ideologien im 20. Jahrhundert hat vielleicht keine andere weltgeschichtliche Epoche so sehr den Vorwurf des perpetuierten »Völkermordes« auf sich gezogen wie der moderne Kolonialismus. Der gesamte europäische Expansionismus erscheint als eine Serie von barbarischen Exzessen, so daß er sich geradezu als Beispielsammlung für eine Geschichte und Typologie des »Genozids« und »Ethnozids« anzubieten scheint. Ein letztes markantes Beispiel lieferten große Teile der Geschichtsdarstellungen und vor allem die Presseberichterstattung zum »Kolumbus-Jahr« 1992. Die Vokabeln Genozid, Ethnozid und neuerdings Okozid fanden eine geradezu inflationäre Verwendung. Selbst an einer Gleichsetzung des Vorgehens der Spanier mit dem Nationalsozialismus hat es nicht gefehlt, und gelegentlich wurde sogar von einem »kolonialen Holocaust« gesprochen.1
