„Despite the growing involvement of multinational firms in foreign-based R&D during the past fifteen years, little research has been done on why and how firms internationalize their R&D and what effects it might have on firm competitiveness.“1 Fundierte wissenschaftliche Analysen über die internationale Forschung und Entwicklung multinationaler Unternehmen sind wohl auch deshalb so spärlich, weil das Untersuchungsgebiet insgesamt noch recht jung ist. Die betriebswirtschaftliche Betrachtung länderübergreifender Innovationstätigkeit kann in vier große Bereiche unterschieden werden:
