Zusammenfassung

Als Vasco da Gama im Mai 1498 den Seeweg nach Indien entdeckte, war gleichzeitig eine Alternative zu den alten Handelswegen der Orientprodukte gefunden. Die Portugiesen brachten sich durch diese Entdeckung in die Lage, den arabischen Zwischenhandel im Indischen Ozean und auf dem Handelsweg nach Italien auszuschalten. Damit stärkte Portugal seine wirtschaftliche Position gegenüber Italien.
