Zusammenfassung

Von der nationalen Parteiversammlung bis zur Einsetzung des Präsidenten, vom Kongress-Kommitee-Hearing bis zum Gebrüll im Fussballstadium, wenn die Menge die Nationalhymne hinausschreit ist das Ritual allgegenwärtiger Teil unseres modernen politischen Lebens. Durch Rituale versuchen aufstrebende politische Führer ihr Recht zu regieren geltend zu machen, Machtinhaber, die bereits auf dem absteigenden Ast sind, versuchen damit ihre Autorität zu wahren und Revolutionäre versuchen damit eine neue Basis politischer Treue zu schaffen. Alle diese politischen Figuren, von den Revolutionsführern bis zu den Meistern des Status quo bedienen sich der Rituale, um eine politische Realität für die sie umgebenden Menschen zu schaffen. Durch die Teilnahme an Ritualen identifiziert sich der Bürger eines modernen Staates mit den politischen Kräften, die nur in symbolischer Form fassbar sind. Und durch ein politisches Ritual, ist uns eine Möglichkeit gegeben zu verstehen, was in der Welt vor sich geht, da wir in einer Welt leben, die drastisch vereinfacht werden muss, wenn sie von allen verstanden werden soll.
