Zusammenfassung

British Columbia (BC) liegt an der Westküste Kanadas und ist mit einer Grundfläche von 947.800 km2 1 über dreieinhalb mal so groß wie die Bundesrepublik Deutschland. Die Landschaft dieser Provinz ist zum größten Teil gebirgig. So befinden sich im Osten BC’s die Rocky Mountains. Mit einer Gesamtlänge von rund 2.000 km bildet dieses riesige Felsengebirge über weite Strecken eine steinerne Grenze zu der Nachbarprovinz Alberta. Westlich der Rockies liegen zwei weitere Gebirgssysteme, die Columbia Mountains im Süden und die Cassiar-Omineca Mountains im Norden der Provinz. Entlang der Westküste BC’s erstrecken sich vom nord-westlichen bis in den süd-westlichen Teil die Coast Mountains, deren höchste Gipfel die 4000 m Marke überschreiten und die z.T. steil zur Pazifikküste hin abfallen. Das Hochland im zentralen Teil BC’s läßt sich am besten als ein großes, von hohen Bergen eingekreistes Becken beschreiben. Die Peace River Region nord-östlich der Rocky Mountains ist relativ flach und ein fruchtbares Gebiet.
