Das 751 qkm große mit ca. 80.000 (1978) Einwohnern überwiegend afrikanischer Abstammung bevölkerte DM wurde 1978 von Großbritannien unabhängig. Die geringe wirtschaftliche Entwicklung dieser karibischen Insel, die hauptsächlich vom Export tropischer Früchte und Hölzer lebt, schlägt sich auch im niedrigen Pro-Kopf-Einkommen von 440 US $(1978) nieder. Die chronisch hohe Arbeitslosenquote wird mit 30% (1978) angegeben.
