Zusammenfassung

Das Kriegsende 1945 markiert für Großbritannien weder politisch noch sozio-ökonomisch eine solch einschneidende Wende wie für Frankreich oder gar das Gebiet des ehemaligen Deutschen Reiches. Zwar entfielen mit diesem Datum eine Reihe wirtschaftlicher und politischer Zwänge, wie sie sich aus der Kriegsführung ergeben hatten, jedoch setzte sich der eben durch diese Zwänge herbeigeführte, grundsätzliche innenpolitische Zielkonsens und teilweise Methodenkonsens bis in die frühen 60er Jahre fort. So wurden auch nach der Auflösung der Kriegskoalition und dem Rücktritt W. Churchills als Resultat der ersten Nachkriegswahlen, deren Hauptstreitpunkt die Frage der Verstaatlichung der Schlüsselindustrien war, die sozialstaatliche Interventionspolitik von der Konservativen Partei nicht prinzipiell abgelehnt und nach dem Wahlsieg im Oktober 1951, der eine 13jährige konservative Regierungsperiode eröffnete, im wesentlichen beibehalten. Dieser Grundkonsens, für den der Begriff „Butskellismus“1 geprägt worden war, löste sich erst in den 60er Jahren zunehmend auf.
