Abstract
While functional aspects of systems have to a great extent been the focus of cognitive science in recent years, the question of cognitive adequacy is now becoming topical. Research in artificial intelligence, psychology and linguistics has contributed to cognitive science under the headline of ‘cognitive simulation’, ‘information-processing systems’, and ‘mental representation’. Common to all these is the assumption that there exists an internal level of organisation in man that can be described independently of physiological and phenomenological awareness terms. This assumption is challenged with the help of psycholinguistic arguments.
