Zusammenfassung

In einem Brief an Robert Liefmann vom 9. März 1920, dem Jahr seines Todes, schreibt Max Weber: „... Wenn ich jetzt nun einmal Soziologe geworden bin (laut meiner Anstellungsurkunde), dann wesentlich deshalb, um dem immer noch spukenden Betrieb, der mit Kollektivbegriffen arbeitet, ein Ende zu machen. Mit anderen Worten: auch Soziologie kann nur durch Ausgehen vom Handeln des oder der, weniger oder vieler Einzelnen — strikt ‚individualistisch ‘in der Methode also — betrieben werden“. Wir haben diesen Text unseren Soziologischen Stichworten als Motto vorangestellt. Er wirft das heilsame Licht des Zweifels auf alle Spielarten des „Holismus“ (Strukturalismus, Historizismus, Kulturalismus, Marxismus usw.), die den Bedenken Webers zum Trotz das Bild der Soziologie in der Öffentlichkeit beherrschen.
