Three Perspectives on Media and Communication Studies in Europe

The theme of this conference is certainly well chosen: Media Psychology in Europe. For better and for worse, Europe East and West is right now involved in extremely dramatic processes of change, and so are its mass media. Parallelly with these huge societal changes, similar changes in the humanities and the social sciences take place, in European universities as well as in other parts of the world. Marxist or Marxisant traditions of scholarship and research are on the wane, sometimes hibernating under the vaguer term of critical studies. Studies of media and communication, on the other hand, are expanding. In some European countries they are already formally institutionalized; in others, they are well on their way towards formal institutionalization, albeit sometimes under different designations. What we see is a new discipline emerging, and it emerges in a period of extremely dynamic political and economical change.
