Abstract
That Lenz’s theatre exerted a seminal influence, is established beyond question in the documentation of its reception in literature, drama and music, recent illustrations of which are discussed by Peter Petersen and Hans-Gerd Winter in their article for the first volume of the new Lenz-Jahrbuch.1 That his theatre was distinctive, contributed in no small measure to its seminal influence. Some of its features are more distinctive than others, one of them, it is claimed, his art of scenic variation, an organic part of the characteristic cluster identified by Inbar as the “Prinzip der Handlungsstränge, Variation, Episodik”.2 The task of this paper is to establish how far a critical assessment of Lenz’s contribution to the art of scenic variation can support such a claim.
