Zusammenfassung
Instabilitäten der Strahlungsemission wurden bereits am ersten Laser, dem Rubinlaser [Maiman 1960] beobachtet. Der Rubinlaser zeigte eine irreguläre, mit Rauschen und Pulsen begleitete Emission selbst unter quasistationären Betriebsbedingungen. Lange Zeit kümmerten sich die Theoretiker wenig um dieses Phänomen, da die rapide Entwicklung und die vielfältige Anwendung der Laser eine Reihe anderer Probleme zum Studium anbot. Heute ist jedoch das Interesse an diesem und verwandten Phänomenen erwacht, da in den letzten Jahren wesentliche mathematische Entdeckungen über Instabilitäten und chaotisches Verhalten von dynamischen Systemen gemacht wurden [Bai-Lin 1984, Bergé et al. 1984, Critanovic 1984, Guckenheimer & Holmes 1983, Moss & Joseph 1980, Kneubühl 1997, Plaschko & Brod 1995, Poston & Steward 1978, Reitmann 1996, Schuster 1984, Thom 1972, 1975, Tu 1992, Verhulst 1990].
