Grundlage einer statistischen Auswertung ist eine Menge (statistische Masse) von Objekten (statistische Einheit), an denen ein (im univariaten Fall) oder mehrere (im multivariaten Fall) Merkmale geprüft werden. Die Ergebnisse, die bei der Beobachtung eines Merkmals auftreten können, heißen Merkmalswerte.
