Abstract

Screws are commonly used for fastening metal and other types of components. A screw has a screw thread, which is a ridge in the form of a spiral on the surface of a cylinder or a cone. An external screw thread is cut on the outside of a cylinder, while an internal screw thread is cut on the inside of a cylindrical hole, as for example in a nut. There are many shapes and types of screw threads, each designed for a specific type of work. Each screw thread is made to a definite specification, and some of the terms used in defining such a specification are given below.
