In ihrer häufigsten Bauform sind Windräder ebenso wie Propeller einstufige Axialmaschinen, die weder ein Gehäuse noch einen Leitapparat haben, und somit eine besonders einfache Form der Strömungsmaschine darstellen. Sie bestehen allein aus dem Laufrad und seiner Lagerung.
