Zusammenfassung
Die inselkeltischen Sprachen bilden zwei Gruppen. Auf der einen Seite die irische (manchmal ‘gälisch’ oder ‘goidelisch’ genannte) Gruppe: das Neuirische, das Schottisch-Gälische und das in diesem Jahrhundert ausgestorbene Manx-Gälische, die sich in historischen Zeiten aus dem Altirischen entwickelt haben. Auf der anderen Seite steht die britannische Gruppe: das Kymrische, das Bretonische und das im 18. Jh. ausgestorbene Komische. Die letztgenannten Sprachen hatten sich schon vor ihrer ersten schriftlichen Bezeugung auseinanderentwickelt.
