Abstract

Bag models are the simplest realization of the confinement idea for the structure of hadrons. Although some of the proponents of bag models see them as possibly giving a fundamental theory of hadrons, I prefer to consider them as a phenomenological description of a situation — confinement of quarks — arising dynamically from a conventional field theory. This view does not diminish the importance of bag models in allowing deep insights in the structure of baryons. Bag models are all the more important since we are still unable to give a fully satisfactory derivation of confinement starting from first principles. Some approaches in this direction will be discussed by Prof. Joos in the next talk. Given the limitation of time, I will only discuss briefly a specific model, the MIT bag, giving a few comments on different models.
