Coping with crisis complexity: Trends, challenges and pathways

  • Chapter

Abstract

The world of crises and crisis management is continuously changing. The year 2001 is the most recent watershed in our understanding of crisis. The growth of the global network society, as we argue in this chapter, introduces more possible threats to our society while increasing the stakes. For public leaders at the various levels of our public systems, the new crises dramatically increase the complexity of their task environment. We identify nine areas of change in crisis management practices and explore the challenges that flow from these changes. Based on that discussion, we consider what leaders can do to prepare for these crises.
