Ein grundlegender Paradigmenwechsel von der Wirkungs- zur Rezeptionsforschung wird zunächst innerhalb des „Uses and gratifications“-Ansatzes virulent und zeigt sich deutlich in einer Verlagerung der Fragestellung: „this is the research tradition which asks not what the media do to people, but what people do with the media“(Katz 1977, zitiert nach Lull 1990a).

„David Morley offers a more circumspect, more reflexive but still limited account of the active viewer. It is, certainly, an active viewer released from the cold hand of class determination (1980) and inserted into the domestic (1986) where, as he later (1989) argued, we need to identify the variety of subject positions that could be taken and negotiated in relation to television within the politics of the family. But not just the family: Morley recognises […] that television changes its meanings from context to context.“(Silverstone 1994, 157)
Zur Offenheit von Fernsehtexten vgl. Holly 1995.
Livingstone unterscheidet verschiedene Formen textnaher und textfernerer Leseweisen, den „readings invited by the text (as function of openness)“und „those made despite the text“(1995, 192). Bei den Leseweisen, „despite the text“unterscheidet sie die abweichenden „aberrant“Leseweisen, „if they deny denotational aspects of the text“und die oppositionellen Leseweisen, „if they oppose ideological aspects of the text“(21995, 192).
„It is clear that there is not just one, reason‘for the pleasure of Dallas, which applies for everyone; each has his or her own more or less unique relationship to the programme. What appeals to us in such a television serial is connected with our individual life histories, with the social situation we are in, with the aesthetic and cultural preferences we have developed, and so on.“(Ang 1985, 26).
