Mitigating the stress of gender recomposition: A cross-institutional, cross-national analysis

  • Chapter
Wahrnehmung und Herstellung von Geschlecht

Abstract

A century ago, sociologist Georg Simmel pointed out that numerical changes in group composition create qualitative transformations in the character of group interaction. The entry of increasing numbers of women into previously male-exclusive work organizations around the world is one example of numerical change that Simmel was talking about. If he was right, then the gender recomposition of workplaces should have profound effects both on social processes in organizations and on the worklives of individual members.
