Late Moche Pottery with Representation of a Funeral

Summary

A series of 7 Mochica bottles belonging to phase 5 (the last Moche style, North Coast of Peru, about 700 A.D.) shows particularily interesting scenes of funeral processions. There are represented: the burial scene, with an assembly probabily related to it, the transfer of conch-shells, and a sacrifice. It may be the funeral of an important man. Father Antonio de la Calancha mentions (1638) that thieves were punished by being tied to a rack, and that they frequently were pecked by birds. The nude female on the picture could maybe interpreted as the unsuccessful doctor sentenced to death.

Zusammenfassung

Eine Serie von 7 Mochica Krügen zeigt besonders interessante Szenen einer Grablegung. Gezeigt werden das Begräbnis, eine Versammlung von dazu in Beziehung stehenden Figuren, die Übergabe von ‘conch-shells’ und ein Opfer. — Es könnte das Begräbnis eines bedeutenden Mannes sein. Father Antonio de la Calancha erwähnt (1638), daß Diebe bestraft wurden, indem man sie auf ein Gerüst band, und daß sie dann von Vögeln zerfleischt wurden. Die nackte Frau auf dem Bild könnte eine Ärztin sein, deren Behandlung versagt hatte und die deshalb zum Tode verurteilt worden war.
