Abstract
It has been suggested that “... it is clear that traditional economic models are replete with assumptions about the nature and interaction of the economic sectors” ... and ... “Far from being derivative or parasitical, the service sector is a vital force in stimulating and facilitating economic growth” (Riddle, 1986). This was a fairly outspoken view in relation to the status of services in approaches to economic development and policy making during the mid-1980s. It has since been replaced by a more open-minded approach to the role of services at any scale, ranging from the global to the local. While this is to be welcomed it seems important to get the export role of services into perspective. Depending on the level (global to local) at which their contribution is assessed, it is important to recognise that services have a direct and an indirect part to play in export activity. It is becoming clear that there is a vital and dynamic synergy between services and manufacturing, especially at the local or regional scale, that underlines the dual role of services in facilitating economic growth and development.
