Zusammenfassung
Die Demokratisierungswelle, die 1974 in Südeuropa begann und 1989/90 ihren Höhepunkt fand, hat zu einer Vielzahl empirischer Untersuchungen geführt. Diese konzentrierten sich vorwiegend auf Demokratie als nationales politisches System und legten ihren Schwerpunkt auf Demokratie als das Ergebnis (outcome) oder als abhängige Variable. Neben diesem übergreifenden Interesse haben die einzelnen Autoren jedoch eine breite Spanne von Aspekten der Politik in Ländern, die sich im Demokratisierungsprozess befinden, betont, verschiedene theoretische Traditionen herangezogen und sich eines vielfältigen Methodenspektrums bedient.
