Abstract

Theorists from many fields have developed models that help explain how semantic information is received, decoded, interpreted, stored, retrieved, encoded, and sent online in an interactive process. Our central theme expands this iterative model to include mechanisms for monitoring new information. On an instrumental level, our analysis indicates discursive strategies to increase the frequency of novel ideas considered worthy of being adopted by the communication partners. In this context, it is important to consider that before semantic selection can begin operating, novelty must be generated. There have to be new ideas to choose from. So we must consider the evolutionary process of variation, selection and retention, whereby the participants can reject those semantic data that are likely to be irrelevant and encourage alternatives that are more promising.
