Zusammenfassung
Bereits am Anfang dieses Buches haben wir die Rolle abstrakter Modelle für das Erforschen der Natur und ihrer Rätsel betont. Überall dort, wo uns die Natur als eine „black box“ gegenübertritt, die wir nicht in ihre Einzelteile zerlegen und mit unserem analytischen Verstand verstehen können, sind wir darauf angewiesen, uns ein Modell von der Welt zu machen. Wir entwickeln eine Vorstellung davon, „wie es gehen könnte“, und überprüfen, ob Modell und Wirklichkeit übereinstimmen. Erst an einem solchen Vergleich zwischen Modell und Wirklichkeit können die zellulären Automaten, wie auch jedes andere abstrakte Modell, ihren Wert als erfolgreiche Instrumente der Wissenschaft unter Beweis stellen.
