Abstract
Today’s PCs and laptops with standard operating systems cannot be considered as secure signature platforms because they are at risk of manipulation when they are connected to public networks. Viruses and Trojan horses can be designed to cause damage in the signature environment. Furthermore, existing concepts do not sufficiently address signature creation in third party environments and working conditions, where documents have to be signed at different workstations. This article presents the Trusted Pocket Signer (TPS), a development funded within the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour (BMWA) programme “VERNET — Secure & Reliable Transactions in Open Communication Networks”. The TPS device is a mobile and trustworthy signature platform based on common PDA technology. It provides features for a secure wireless communication, trustworthy visualization of documents to be signed and convenient biometric authentication. Common smart cards are used as secure signature creation device.
