Abstract

This chapter describes many of the key issues facing and management approaches being taken by the executives of large multi-unit corporations (LMUc) based in the United States. While such companies have existed in the U. S. for over a century, their effective management has been of particular interest to government officials, investors, managers, researchers and the general public since the mid-1960s (Chandler, 1990, 1991). However, never has the interest been greater than at the present time when IBM, General Motors, Sears and Westinghouse are struggling with structural problems, while General Electric, Hewlett-Packard, Merck, Johnson & Johnson, and many others seem to be progressing effectively (Smart, 1993; Tichy and Sherman, 1992).
