Zusammenfassung
Neue Untersuchungs- und Anwendungsmethoden werden in wissenschaftliche Forschungsprogramme eingeführt. Als Ergebnis der finanziellen Unterstützung durch den Staat und der Interaktion von Universität und Industrie modifiziert sich das Wissenschaftssystem in Funktion und Struktur. So existieren in den Vereinigten Staaten je nach Definition zwischen 100 und 400 Forschungsinstituten. Die meisten wissenschaftlichen Labore widmeten sich traditionell dem Fortschritt ihrer Disziplin, während nahezu alle industriellen und öffentlichen Forschungslabore Institutionen jeweils im Dienst einer einzigen Firma oder Gesellschaft stehen. Gegenwärtig vollzieht sich im Verhalten von Wissenschaftlern aus dem Bereich der Hochschulen ein Prozeß normativen Wandels im Hinblick auf den ökonomischen Wert ihrer Forschung, eine Neuinterpretation und Revision ungeschriebener Verhaltensregeln (Etzkowitz 1989). Forschungsergebnisse werden nun sowohl auf ihre kommerzielle als auch auf ihre theoretische Relevanz hin geprüft, da Regierungen, Industrie und Universität auf die Umsetzung wissenschaftlicher Forschung in Wirtschaftstätigkeit hoffen. Von Wissenschaftlern, die als Unternehmer oder als Partner von Unternehmern bei Firmengründungen agieren, wird Wissen in Aktienkapital umgewandelt. Ältere Industrieunternehmen entdecken neue Produkte und Produktionsprozesse, indem sie Anschluß an wissenschaftliche Forschungsgruppen finden (Langfitt et al. 1983). Universitäten treffen Vereinbarungen, um die Ergebnisse ihrer Wissenschaftler zu kommerzialisieren und dadurch die wissenschaftliche Forschung zu finanzieren.
