Abstract

The duties and challenges of modern Africanist folktale research are

  1. (1)

    the methodologically sound recording of oral narrative performances according to (socio)linguistic, ethnographical and folkloristic standards,

  2. (2)

    the linguistically based processing of the texts (transcription, translation, annotation),

  3. (3)

    the literary, linguistic and anthropological analysis of the recorded texts,

  4. (4)

    the preparation of the texts for scholarly accessibility (circulation, publication, archive),

  5. (5)

    the modern philological evaluation of the earlier editions of oral literary materials,

  6. (6)

    the provision of texts and analytical data for the application in the various sectors of the education system.
